New Combined Motor Start & Braking Device: VBMS

Advanced Control has extended its range of products with the launch of a new type: the Combined Motor Start & Braking Device VBMS, now taking the place of the previous BRMS series. The device, which meets the GS-HO-01 requirements made on wood working machines by the German Trade Association, combines a motor contactor and a dc brake in a single unit. An integrated motor contactor enables direct-on-line starting. The device implements a simple form of motor control comprising only a few elements.

The VBMS allows braking current adjustments within a range from 10 to 100% of the rated device current. Therefore, there is no real need to check the braking current during commissioning.

After the motor has come to a standstill, an integrated standstill detection function switches the braking current off. The braking device will detect when the adjusted braking current is not reached. This could be the case, for instance, in the event of wire breakage. By adapting the motor standstill detection function, it is possible to connect a variety of different motor types.

With an integrated monitoring function, the VBMS detects possible overloading such as too frequent braking. In this event, the motor is prevented from restarting in order to protect both the motor and the combined motor start & braking device. This condition can be reset only by a disconnection from the mains. Thus, the VBMS combination unit helps to improve operational safety.

A motor protecting switch can additionally be connected before the VBMS device.

A controlled free-wheeling diode eliminates current peaks otherwise occurring during closing of the braking relays. Thus, the danger of possible damage to the relays is considerably reduced.
